Libyan presidential elections get fiercer after Speaker files for candidacy

CAIRO – 18 November 2021: Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives Aguila Saleh turned presidential election race fiercer after he had filed for candidacy Wednesday following other very prominent figures.

Those are Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Field Marshall Khalifa Haftar, and Seif al-Islam al-Qaddafi, son of Late Libyan President Muammar al-Qaddafi, who got assassinated in 2011, which made the country fall into chaos.

There are also other popular candidates, who are Aref al-Nayed and Ahmed Maitiq. Nayed is former Libyan Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, and businessman. He is currently the leader of “Libya Revival Coalition.” As for Maitiq, he was the minister of interior in the Government of National Accord (GNU), which was an interim government that was in power between 2014 and January 2021.

Candidacy filing for the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections – scheduled for December 24 – began on November 7 and is lasting for two weeks.
