Bless those who deny themselves as they deny their stomach. Bless those who celebrate with others as they celebrate your mercy.<\/p>\n

Bless those also, who push either to greater piety.<\/p>\n

And if in their encouragement they lack piety themselves, God, bless them, too.<\/p>\n

May they deny their pride. May they discover your mercy.<\/p>\n

May Egypt\u2019s fasting in Ramadan lead her along your way.<\/p>\n

Not just her Muslims: Many Christians continue their weekly Coptic fasting. And they do not eat or drink in public, from respect.<\/p>\n

So of them all, draw them closer to you in word and deed and being.<\/p>\n

Ramadan often becomes a battleground. One critic questioned if fasting is even necessary. Others condemn the popular tradition of hanging lanterns.<\/p>\n

Some defend their religious turf. Others hawk merchandise and gouge prices.<\/p>\n

Some complain all day and eat all night.<\/p>\n

And some\u2014surely many\u2014have a heart contrite and humble.<\/p>\n

Bless them all, God. Honor their fasting.<\/p>\n

Amen.<\/p>\n
