CAIRO – 16 November 2021: Libya’s military leader, Khalifa Haftar announced on Tuesday he will run in a Dec. 24 presidential election that aims to help end a decade of conflict.<\/p>\n
In a speech, broadcast live on Libyan television, Haftar said “I declare my candidacy for the presidential election, not because I am chasing power but because I want to lead our people towards glory, progress and prosperity.”<\/p>\n
Haftar affirmed that the poll is “the only way to pull Libya out of chaos”.<\/p>\n
On September 22, he provisionally retired from his role as head of the LNA in line with electoral law to allow him to run for president.<\/p>\n
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libya\u2019s former leader Muammar Gaddafi, registered on Nov. 14, as a presidential candidate for the December 24 election, an official from the electoral commission told Al Arabiya.<\/p>\n
\u201cSeif al-Islam Kadhafi submitted… his candidacy for the presidential election to the High National Electoral Commission office in the (southern) city of Sebha,\u201d a statement by the commission said.<\/p>\n
It said he had completed \u201call the required legal conditions\u201d and that he was also issued with a voter registration card for the Sebha district.<\/p>\n
Libya\u2019s first-ever direct presidential poll, with the first round on December 24, is the climax of a process launched last year by the United Nations to draw a line under years of violence since the revolt that toppled Moamer Kadhafi in 2011.<\/p>\n
Several political figures have announced their candidacy to compete for the presidency, such as former Libyan delegate to the United Nations and Head of the Libya Revival Bloc Ibrahim Dabbashi; former Ambassador to the UAE Aref Al-Nayed; MP Abdessalam Nassiya; and Head of the Renewal Party Suleiman Al-Bayoudi; along with a comedian and others unknown to the public opinion. The position has not yet captured the attention of women.<\/p>\n
