Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has affirmed Egypt\u2019s keenness to reach a binding legal agreement on GERD as he addressed the 34th African Union Summit on Saturday.<\/p>\n
He also stressed Egypt\u2019s keenness to help secure the coronavirus vaccine within the AU strategy, welcoming an invitation directed to Egypt to join the union\u2019s Vaccine Acquisition Task Team (AVATT).<\/p>\n
The two-day summit has been held via video conference due to the conditions imposed by the pandemic.<\/p>\n
According to the presidency, Sisi called for strengthening the African efforts to face the repercussions of the pandemic in different sectors within the content, including on economies, health, and security.<\/p>\n
The president affirmed his confidence in the ability of the AU, currently chaired by Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi, in helping reaching the desired agreement on the Ethiopian dam, which would take into account the interests of the parties concerned and preserve Egypt’s water rights.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am confident in the ability of the African Union under the leadership of President Tshisekedi in contributing to advancing our efforts aiming at reaching a legal binding agreement on the filling and operation of the Renaissance Dam before the implementation of the second stage of the filling process of the dam, in a way that takes into consideration the interests and concerns of the three states,\u201d Sisi added.<\/p>\n
During his speech, Sisi extended his thanks and appreciation to the South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for his efforts during the South African presidency of the AU last year within the tripartite negotiations.<\/p>\n
\u201cI extend my thanks and appreciation for my brother, his highness, President Cyril Ramaphosa for his esteemed efforts to reach a comprehensive, fair, balanced and binding agreement on the filling and operation of the Renaissance Dam,\u201d Sisi said.<\/p>\n
Sisi thanked Ramaphosa \u201cfor personally taking part in the negotiations, which reflects his highness\u2019s keenness to advance the mutual interests of the African countries and search for solutions to the issue and crisis facing our continent\u201d.<\/p>\n
Sisi congratulated President Tshisekedi for his country\u2019s assumption of the AU chair position for this year, wishing him success in his mission amid this \u201chard period\u201d.<\/p>\n
