Le sommeil ne vient pas. Ce qui nous emp\u00eache de tomber dans les bras de Morph\u00e9e ? La mauvaise coordination de deux m\u00e9canismes compl\u00e9mentaires, indispensables \u00e0 l&#8217;endormissement. Le premier fonctionne comme une balance, avec le \u00ab poids \u00bb de l&#8217;\u00e9veil d&#8217;un c\u00f4t\u00e9 et celui du sommeil de l&#8217;autre. L&#8217;\u00e9veil doit en particulier \u00eatre assez long pour basculer en position de sommeil. Le second m\u00e9canisme est li\u00e9 \u00e0 notre horloge biologique interne. Si cette derni\u00e8re n&#8217;est pas bien synchronis\u00e9e, la bascule ne se fait pas correctement.<\/p>\n<p>Quels facteurs d\u00e9r\u00e8glent cette horloge ? Pour le comprendre, il faut d&#8217;abord analyser son fonctionnement. Le support biologique de notre horloge interne est le noyau suprachiasmatique, situ\u00e9 dans l&#8217;hypothalamus, une r\u00e9gion c\u00e9r\u00e9brale profonde. Elle agit en chef d&#8217;orchestre et donne le tempo \u00e0 la plupart des cellules de notre organisme qui adaptent leur physiologie en cons\u00e9quence. C&#8217;est elle qui r\u00e8gle notre rythme veille-sommeil&#8230; sur un cycle de 24 h 30 ! De fait, contrairement \u00e0 ce que l&#8217;on pourrait croire, l&#8217;horloge biologique n&#8217;est pas r\u00e9gl\u00e9e sur le cycle de rotation de la Terre. Ce fait \u00e9tonnant a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9couvert gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une exp\u00e9rience r\u00e9alis\u00e9e en 1962. Michel Siffre, un sp\u00e9l\u00e9ologue fran\u00e7ais, s&#8217;\u00e9tait alors isol\u00e9 dans une grotte pendant plus d&#8217;un mois. Priv\u00e9 de lumi\u00e8re naturelle et de rep\u00e8re temporel, il suivait son propre rythme. R\u00e9sultat : ses alternances veille-sommeil \u00e9taient r\u00e9gl\u00e9es sur un cycle r\u00e9gulier sup\u00e9rieur \u00e0 24 heures.<\/p>\n<p>Si l&#8217;on suivait notre rythme naturel, on devrait donc se d\u00e9caler d&#8217;environ une demi-heure chaque jour. Pourtant, nous restons cal\u00e9s sur le cycle de 24 heures impos\u00e9 par le grand m\u00e9tronome terrestre. Qui sont ces horlogers qui remettent chaque jour notre horloge biologique \u00e0 l&#8217;heure ? Le plus efficace est la lumi\u00e8re du jour, et en particulier sa composante bleue. En effet, lorsque la r\u00e9tine per\u00e7oit de la lumi\u00e8re bleue avec une intensit\u00e9 suffisante, elle s\u00e9cr\u00e8te une prot\u00e9ine d&#8217;\u00e9veil &#8211; la m\u00e9lanopsine &#8211; qui ajuste le tempo du noyau suprachiasmatique et recale ainsi l&#8217;horloge biologique. Les horaires impos\u00e9s par une activit\u00e9 socio-professionnelle, les repas et surtout l&#8217;activit\u00e9 physique constituent \u00e9galement des signaux d&#8217;\u00e9veil. En revanche, il n&#8217;y a qu&#8217;un seul signal de synchronisation de l&#8217;horloge en \u00ab mode sommeil \u00bb : l&#8217;obscurit\u00e9. En l&#8217;absence de lumi\u00e8re, nous s\u00e9cr\u00e9tons en effet une hormone &#8211; la m\u00e9latonine &#8211; qui r\u00e9gule elle aussi l&#8217;horloge biologique. En fonction de la force respective de ces signaux, notre cerveau se met soit en mode \u00ab \u00e9veil \u00bb soit en mode \u00ab sommeil \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Ce syst\u00e8me de r\u00e9gulation est fragile. Un grain de sable et cette belle m\u00e9canique est enray\u00e9e. L&#8217;utilisation d&#8217;\u00e9crans \u00e0 r\u00e9tro-\u00e9clairage avant de se coucher (grands \u00e9metteurs de lumi\u00e8re bleue), le manque de soleil ou d&#8217;activit\u00e9 physique pendant la journ\u00e9e, ou au contraire le surplus d&#8217;activit\u00e9 physique juste avant le coucher, sont autant de facteurs qui perturbent le syst\u00e8me.
