Egyptian National Seismic Network (ENSN) recorded on Saturday an earthquake 200 km north of Marsa Matrouh governorate, on one of the Islands of Crete, in the Mediterranean Sea.<\/p>\n
Dr. Jad Al-Qadi, head of the National Institute of Astronomical Research, revealed that the earthquake data were as follows:<\/p>\n
– Time of occurrence was at 14: 51:14 pm local time.
\n– Magnitude: 6.2 on the Richter scale
\n– Latitude: 3 \u00b0 34.07N
\n– Longitude: 25.61 \u00b0 E
\n– Depth: 10 km<\/p>\n
The head of the National Institute for Astronomical Research confirmed that he had not received any reports of any losses or injuries.<\/p>\n
The strongest and latest powerful earthquake hitting Egypt took place in November, 1995 in the Gulf of Aqaba, hitting also Saudi Arabia, Israel and Jordan with a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale. 12 people reportedly died.<\/p>\n
However, it is not the largest earthquake in terms of total damage. In 1992, a 5.3 magnitude hit Cairo, and caused the death of 545 people, according to World Data.<\/p>\n
