Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry discussed U.S.-Egypt relations with national security adviser Rober O\u2019Brien on Wednesday as well as a number of regional issues of mutual concern.<\/p>\n
Shoukry traveled to the US on Monday to participate in talks with the foreign and irrigation ministers of Ethiopia and Sudan over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in a final bid to resolve months of stalemates between Cairo and Addis Ababa over the operation of the mega dam.<\/p>\n
The ministers of foreign affairs and water resources of the three countries agreed in January on a schedule for the filling plan and a mitigation mechanism for filling the dam during times of drought and prolonged drought.<\/p>\n
Shokry and O’Brien stressed during their meeting the need to boost coordination between Egypt and the United States of America in a number of regional issues, including the Syrian crisis and the situation in Libya.<\/p>\n
Both officials also highlighted Egypt\u2019s efforts in combating terrorism and addressed countering the smuggling of terrorists to and from Libya and the Sahel and Sahara states.<\/p>\n
They also reviewed the developments of the negotiations on the Renaissance Dam and the American administration’s efforts to reach an agreement that serves the interests of the three countries.<\/p>\n
