Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry stressed on Friday the importance of removing Sudan from the list of states sponsoring terrorism to help the Arab country face its current economic challenges.<\/p>\n
This came during Shoukry’s speech to a high-level event about Sudan, held on the sidelines of the 74th meetings of the UN General Assembly (UNGA74) in New York, according to a statement issued by spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Hafez.<\/p>\n
Egypt is keen on supporting Sudan through its transitional phase, the top diplomat noted, greeting the Sudanese government and people on what they had achieved lately towards stability.<\/p>\n
The minister called on the international community to offer all kinds of support to the new Sudanese government.<\/p>\n
Sudan was classified as a state sponsor of terrorism in 1993 under former U.S. President Bill Clinton, isolating from financial markets and stifling its economy.<\/p>\n
Washington lifted a 20-year trade embargo on Sudan in 2017, and was in discussions about removing it from the U.S. terror list when the military intervened on April 11 to oust Bashir, who ruled Sudan for 30 years.<\/p>\n
