As the Ministry of Electricity has estimated the losses the sector incurred as a result of power theft in billions of pounds; it has put a plan to cease the violation. <\/p>\n
Stealing power current has several forms, like at traditional celebrations and occasions, but the government has taken several procedures to curb the act by issuing a new electricity law. The government has advised citizens to resort to legal ways rather than stealing the current, which is considered a felony punished by imprisonment and a fine. <\/p>\n
The new law stipulates that whoever is charged with power theft will be punished by an imprisonment term of not less than 6 months and not more than 2 years or a fine of L.E. 10,000-100,000 or by both punishments. The lawsuit would be revoked if parties reconciled. <\/p>\n
More steps were taken by the government in a bid to reduce power theft, including launching awareness campaigns especially at slums, beefing up investigations by heads of trade sectors at different companies to capture the violations and expanding the duties of judicial police to 529 electricity employees to search for the violation, report it and estimate the cost of the stolen current. <\/p>\n
The Ministry of Justice has issued a decision to grant 529 employees at the Ministry of Electricity the right to file reports on power thefts. The employees were selected according to their integrity. <\/p>\n
According to the decision, the selected employees will also have the right to estimate the fine to be imposed on the violators based on the estimated amount of electricity stolen. <\/p>\n
The electricity distribution companies are assigned to collect the fine. <\/p>\n
A total of 79,432 reports have been filed for power theft and the ministry has announced collecting L.E. 157,290,000 out of a total of L.E. 562,200,000.
\nThe Ministry of Electricity targets to save L.E. 2 billion from the stolen electricity current by June 2019. <\/p>\n
