<\/p>\nIn his meeting with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi affirmed that Egypt\u2019s current leadership of the African Union has an important strategic dimension for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), said Egyptian presidential spokesperson Bassam Radi in a statement on Thursday. <\/p>\n
\u201cPresident Sisi affirmed that Egypt\u2019s current leadership of the African Union has an important strategic dimension for Egypt\u2019s active participation in the Belt and Road Initiative, in light of Beijing\u2019s keenness of strong coordination with Africa to achieve its developing priorities,\u201d the statement read. <\/p>\n
President Sisi also highlighted his country\u2019s support to the Chinese development projects that come under the Belt and Road Initiative, Radi said, adding that the President added that Suez Canal Development Corridor, where a Chinese Industrial Zone is being established, is a point of convergence between Egyptian and Chinese cooperation <\/p>\n
The Belt and Road Initiative was launched by the Chinese government to enhance trade, investments, and infrastructure in than 150 countries in Asia, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. The initiative is a revival to what was known as \u201cThe Silk Road.\u201d <\/p>\n

Both leaders discussed bilateral relations in economic, investment, trade, and security fields, Radi said, encouraging Chinese companies to increase investments in Egypt. President Sisi voiced aspiration that the Chines government takes necessary measures to promote Egyptian exports, particularly the non-oil goods, to China to shrink the trade deficit between both countries. <\/p>\n
They also tackled international and regional issues of mutual concern, particularly the international counter-terrorism efforts. <\/p>\n
President Sisi arrived Beijing early Thursday to attend the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRFIC). He visited six times over the past five years. <\/p>\n
The second edition of BRFIC is taking place on April 25 – 27, and attended by 37 heads of state, the United Nations secretary-general and the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). That is in addition to 5,000 from more than 150 countries, and 90 international organizations, reported CGTN. <\/p>\n
The initiative was launched in 2013. Since then, BRI agreements were signed by 126 countries and 29 international organizations with China.<\/p>\n
