The Egyptian government and the United Nation Development Program (UNDP) signed on Tuesday the project, titled \u2018Enhancing Climate Change Adaption in the North Coast and Nile Delta of Egypt\u2019, through which the government will receive a grant of $31.5 million.<\/p>\n
Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Ragab Abdel Azem said during a press conference that the project aims to protect the country from coastal floods in Port Said, Damietta, Dakahlia, Kafr al-Sheikh and Beheira governorates, which have been identified as highly vulnerable to rises in sea level induced by climate change.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Richard Dictus, head of the UNDP\u2019s office in Cairo, said the project, which is funded by the UN\u2019s Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), would commence its activities by December.<\/p>\n
The project will expand the use of a low-cost dike system to prevent flooding of the low-lying lands from sea surges during extreme weather events. The dike system was first tested under the GEF Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF) project.<\/p>\n
