{"id":10248,"date":"2017-05-19T13:55:50","date_gmt":"2017-05-19T11:55:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/almowatna.news\/?p=10248"},"modified":"2017-05-19T13:55:50","modified_gmt":"2017-05-19T11:55:50","slug":"cairo-criminal-court-acquits-hussein-salem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/almowatna.news\/?p=10248","title":{"rendered":"Cairo Criminal Court acquits Hussein Salem"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m_7025529775341668660yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1495101456326_47684\"><span id=\"m_7025529775341668660yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1495101456326_47685\">The Cairo Criminal\u00a0Court, headed by Abdel Tauwab Ibrahim Gadallah,<\/span><span id=\"m_7025529775341668660yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1495101456326_47686\"> <\/span><span id=\"m_7025529775341668660yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1495101456326_47687\">acquitted on Thursday Hussein Salem in the retrial of his case of exporting gas to Israel.<\/span><span id=\"m_7025529775341668660yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1495101456326_47688\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_7025529775341668660yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1495101456326_47689\"><span id=\"m_7025529775341668660yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1495101456326_47690\">Cairo\u2019s Criminal\u00a0Court had acquitted Salem in 2015, but the public prosecutors <\/span><span id=\"m_7025529775341668660yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1495101456326_47692\">appealed the verdict.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Hussein Salem, the Spanish-Egyptian businessman, was an adviser to\u00a0former president Hosni Mubarak and was accused of exporting gas to Israel for less than the global price in order to achieve personal benefits.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Egyptian authorities had announced a reconciliation with Salem if he\u2019s willing to give up 75% of his properties, which are worth a value exceeding EGP 5bn.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Salem is one of the most famous businessmen to have\u00a0invested and participated in establishing Sharm El-Shiekh, one of the most important touristic cities in Egypt, back in 1982.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Before Mubarak decided to step down, Salem traveled to Spain, worrying that the government would accuse him in many corruption cases.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">In the same year as the\u00a025 January 2011 revolution, the government requested Spain to extradite\u00a0Salem back to Egypt. Spain had arrested him and was ready to send him back; however, he was later released on bail for \u20ac27m and never extradited to Egypt.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">In October 2011, the court sentenced him to seven years imprisonment for money laundering. The court also sentenced him to 15 years imprisonment in 2012 for exporting gas to Israel at\u00a0cheap prices, as well as\u00a0stealing\u00a0areas of land.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">In 2012, Spain\u2019s Court of Appeal agreed to send Salem back to Egypt, but the Constitutional Court of Spain postponed the action again to decide if it violates his constitutional rights.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Then,\u00a0in 2015, the court decided that Salem and another six\u00a0defendants were to be\u00a0acquitted in\u00a0the case of exporting gas to Israel.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">(Daily News Egypt)<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Cairo Criminal\u00a0Court, headed by Abdel Tauwab Ibrahim Gadallah, acquitted on Thursday Hussein Salem in the retrial of his case of exporting gas to Israel.
